Mission Statement

The mission of the Working Group on Violence against Women is the promotion and advocacy for the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.

“Violence against women is a universal problem and one of the most widespread violations of human rights. It can include physical, sexual, psychological and economic abuse, and it cuts across boundaries of age, race, culture, wealth and geography.  It takes place in the home, on the streets, in schools, the workplace, in far fields, refugee camps, during conflicts and crisis.  It has many manifestation –f rom the most universally prevalent forms of domestic and sexual violence, to harmful practices, abuse during pregnancy, so-called honor killings and other types of femicide” (Source: UN Women)



  • The WG will support the work of the Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN WOMEN and in particular ‘Ending violence against women’
  • The WG will follow and support the work of the Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women Ms. Rashida Manjoo (South Africa)
  • The WG will monitor the work of the UN Human Rights mechanisms and other UN agencies and bodies based in Geneva, as related to the implementation of the recommendations of the UN Study on VAW
  • The WG will support the advancement of the recommendations of the UN Study on VAW with key players in Geneva, notably the UN, Diplomatic missions and regional institutions, in collaboration with civil society organizations and network
  • The WG will strengthen the coordination and leverage the voice of local and global women’s organizations working on VAW
  • The WG will participate:
    1) 8 March – International Women’s Day
    2) 25 November – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
    3) 16-Days of activism for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25.11 – 10.12)
    4) White Ribbon events
    5) Any other as appropriate



  • Create, maintain and strengthen links with the office of the Executive Director of UN Women and her staff in New York and with the CEDAW committee in Geneva
  • Partner with the NGO-CSW Working Group “The Role of men and boys” in all of its activities
  • Enhance information exchanges, including on the NGO-CSW website, and partnering with relevant bodies
